Rookie Homebrewer From Ontario

Hey,

I'm a 20 year old beer lover currently attending University. I figured beer making could save me some money, and become an enjoyable hobby.

I found this site through searching for information on home brewing. My local wine/beer making store focuses mainly on wine, but they carry the Muntons line of Beer Making Kits. I've had a Premium Pilsner (straight out to the package) fermenting since Monday night and can't wait to get it into the bottles. I also picked up the Muntons 'American Style Light'. I was planning on picking up the 'Home Brewing for Dummies' book, but was wondering it there's a more useful book to teach me the basics to brewing. I hope to eventually learn to add hops and other interesting mixes into my beer, but for now I'll stick to the basics. Any advice is appreciated.

Also, next year I'm moving into a house with a few of my buddies and I thought learning to keg the beer could make throwing keggers more profitable. Plus, what other way does a home brewer have to test new recipes on hundreds of paying volunteers ;-)

Now I'll get back to studying for my exam tomorrow.

Sean.

Welcome Sean. You have come to the right place for help with your brewing and for having some light hearted fun as well. You will find some of the best brewers in the country as well as some of the craziest. It shouldn't take you long to sort them out.

It looks like you are making a good start. Homebrewing for Dummies isn't a bad book. The one you will find most people recommending, however, is John Palmer's "How to Brew". The first edition is available to read online at www.howtobrew.com. I highly recommend picking up the hard copy third edition, though. It was just released about 6 months ago and had been greatly enlarged and updated from previous editions.

Be sure to tune in to the Sunday night webcasts (5:00 pm Pacific Time) for good brewing information and a generally entertaining good time. The chat room is also active at the same time so you can ask any questions you have for the guests and/or brewcasters in real time so they can answer right on the air. Other chat room members will probably also jump in to answer questions for you too.

Every other Monday, Jamil Z. has a more serious program dealing with brewing various styles of beer. He covers one beer style each program. I think his next program is on dunkelweissens.

Every other Friday, JP and Justin have a program called Lunch Meat. This program will cover almost anything BUT brewing beer  , It is an hour of irreverent humor, poking fun at just about anything. Just be warned, it is adult programming so the language may not be appropriate for listening around the kids or at work.

Welcome to the madness! Let us know how your latest beer is coming along.

Welcome to the forum. Be prepared to be harassed and harangued, but in good fun... I second the "How to Brew" recommendation, bought mine on Amazon. And if its not forbidden to mention it, check out the podcasts from basicbrewingradio.com, they are not as amusing as the BNs, but I still enjoy them.

PS - Quit sending your damn coins down here!

Weclome Beerdrinker!

Ahh the good ol days of keg parties with college kids. I haven't done that in like....oh... a month or so :D

I definitely second "How to Brew" as the beginners (and advanced) comprehensive text...it's all there man.

I also second listening to Basic Brewing. I think in your situation as a brand new brewer, you'll find some easy to follow and concise instruction on all things brewing over there. It's here too, but a little more rowdy upon delivery :aaron

Enjoy my brotha!
