Pepe Nero from Goose Island
I don't typically buy Goose Island's beers, but after Justin was blowing them on air I figured I'd give this one & Sofie a shot (haven't seen Matilda available in Montana yet). Wow. What an amazing let down. I don't know if InBev's acquisition has changed these at all, but I'm seriously not impressed. Perhaps they were mishandled, but they both tasted clean & fresh so I'm doubting it. The best thing I can say about either one was Pepe had a nice creamy head & neither had offensive off-flavors. Other than that I can brew circles around either one of these beers without trying. Neither was 'bad' per se, but from their history & experience I expected a lot more than just drinkable, as in I can swallow it without spitting it back out. Hell, I expect more from a 5 year all grain vet who has a rudimentary understanding of water chem. If it weren't for the fact that everything in my kegerator is still carbing, I'd very likely dump the 2nd half of this bottle. Very disappointed & I'm wishing I hadn't wasted my money on either one of these bombers. Even with Matilda's hype, I definitely won't waste more money for something that might be barely ok.
Edit: I got to the end of the first glass & changed my mind. I've got some PBR in the fridge. Fuck this shit. Dumped.
