I always start my syphon by filling the tube with sanitizer while one end is attached to the racking cane and then all at once dropping the tube below the vessel and letting it drain into a bowl. That starts the syphon, then I pinch the hose and move it to the vessel I'm transferring too. Not the best way probably but it works for me.

I also agree that the gadgets were bad this year. I probably have some things around my brewery that are not gadgets by any stretch but could have made the list.

Excellent! And just think for a few bucks you can have a bunch of extras laying around.
