Houston Brewer

Thu Mar 12, 2009 4:54 am

Greetings fellow hopheads! :bnarmy: Just getting back into homebrewing after a decade break. I was one of four that started the Bay Area Mashtronauts here in Houston in 1991. started with partial which lasted 3 batches then went to all grain and have stayed there. I just finished my brew system, FrankenBrutus, that sat in the garage for 10 years and have brewed one batch so far on it. I used a friends system to do two, Kolsh (now on tap) and an IPA. My first on my system was an Oatmeal Stout and my next one is a Brown Ale. I was disappointed as I only got 60% efficency, but my water pH probably was not right, I now have a pH meter. I can get 3 batches in my fermentation refrigerator, serve four from my corni serving frig. with two more getting conditioned (6 total). I just rebuilt my beer engine and should have a pin firkin by next week. I hope to get my system efficency up to 80-84% so I can nail my recipes. I am updating my home page with pictures and will list later.

Welcome back...Sounds like a pretty sweet setup. Maybe post some brewing pron on the forum once you get all the cobwebs cleaned off your system.

Some pics are at my home page:

I have not posted all details, unit is semi-automated as the burners are controled by Love controllers to Asco valves on the 165,000 btu burners. MT is throttled back to about 20% as it is direct heat MT.

 Good one. I-10 will always be under construction. Or is that just on the Louisiana side? My sister lives in Houston. May have to crash your homebrew club meeting if I visit.

Hi there - I'm just getting into the brew thing, one extract, one partial, and waiting to get home so I can start using my new AG set up.
I too am in Houston, Meyerland area, Scottish originally, been in H'town for 8 years.
My other new(ish) toy was a Triumph Thruxton - of course I do not mix these two hobbies!
If you are interested in getting together for a brewday sometime, would love to pic your brain and pic up some tips.

Cheers!

Just got a firkin last week and will get books from England by 6 Apr. I am planning on making a firkin (10.8 US Gallons) of true English Ale for the Bay Area Mashtronauts Lunar Rendezbrew XVI http://mashtronauts.pbwiki.com/Lunar-Rendezbrew-XVI and serving with a genuine beer engine. :jnj
