First time using Amarillo Hops

Sun May 08, 2011 5:37 am

I am looking at making a rye pale ale using some amarillo and some cascades. I have never used the Amarillos and it has been a loooong time since I brewed with cascades. I am getting back into hoppy beers again. Maybe it is something to do with summer creepin up. I have a bunch of other hops on hand, but I think that these guys would be good buddies in a beer.
Anyone have a good tried and true recipe?
Thanks all! :pop

I'm about to brew a Red Rye with Amarillo whole as late hop along with some Cascade from the freezer (last years crop). Like you, it's my first time using Amarillo but I've tasted enough beers with it to know it's worth doin. I'm bewing this next week and I'll let you know what it does.

Right on, Brutha! I made the rye pa last Monday with the cascades. Going to do the same grain bill and use the Amarillo this coming Monday.

IMHO Amarillo has a great flavor and nice aroma. I use them in a single hop pale ale every year. They are not particularly different in bittering from other common bittering hops although they are fairly high in AA.

My recommendation is to use a less expensive hop for bittering (Cascade or Centenial). Use the Amarillo for the flavor and aroma additions. I have mixed them with Cascade for flavor additions but the Amarillo seems to dominate. I love to dry hop with Amarillo and I have added them to the kegged beer as well.

Amarillo is my favorite in APA
Well that keg disappeared fast!
