Fat Tire Clone Recipe?

Mon Mar 07, 2011 7:48 pm

Anyone make a Fat Tire clone? Thinking about brewing something like a Fat Tire tomorrow...Heres what i have come up with.

For a 5 gallon Batch
80% Mash Eff.
OG - 1.048
24 IBU using Rager

6.5 lbs. 2-Row Brewers Malt info
1 lbs. Munich 10L Malt info
.25 lbs. 2-Row Caramel Malt 80L info
.75 lbs. Victory® Malt info
.2 lbs. Special Roast Malt info
.75 oz. Willamette (Pellets, 5.00 %AA) boiled 90 min. info
.25 oz. Willamette (Pellets, 5.00 %AA) boiled 60 min. info
.5 oz. Willamette (Pellets, 5.00 %AA) boiled 1 min. info
1 tsp. Irish Moss (15 min left boil ) (not included in calculations)
Yeast : White Labs WLP001 California Ale info

I did a clone recipe out of BYO last year and it came out to dark and had alot of caramel character I didn't get in the Fat Tire. I brewed Jamils Special Bitter and I got a nice cracker note out of that beer from the Special Roast, thinking it might work here.
Pouring - Infidel Porter, Pallino Wit
Fermenting - Till a rustic Saison
On Deck - Abbey Dubbel, Belgian Golden Strong maybe with brett

Without their yeast, it will never come close to tasting like Fat Tire.

I would use Marris Otter 2 row. It's slightly nuttier flavor will help. Also, some biscuit will add to the bready flavor. .5 lb should work.

Again, until you get the Fat Tire yeast, all you will have is a basic, yet tasty amber ale.

Any experience with the BYO Fat Tire clone in extract? I'm thinking of doing that soon.

If I remember correctly someone on here has been working on nailing this one down. I know they were getting pretty close but I just can't remember who it was. I remember seeing some past posts about it complete with pics for color comparison. Have you searched the forum for it?
