I was wondering about how to string them.

Wed Mar 29, 2006 2:34 pm

I have just planted my rhizomes and I haven't decided how I was going to string them up yet. I was thinking about running some horizontly and the others up about 8 feet then horizontaly. I don't have the ability to run them all vertically so I have to come up with a different way. I am going to have to use some steel cable for some of them too. My question is, does any of this sound like it won't work? I am mostly wondering about the wire for strining it over. thanks.

It is work for first year plants. Even if they grow above 5 feet, they will be thin. Don't work at it too much this year. You can even leave them alone and let them bush out. Next year, you'll have more work in front of ya and even more after that.

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Wow, I'm glad to see that I've been worried about nothing. I guess I just need to relax and have a homebrew. I'll try to post pics when my hops start growing. I have planted 6 Cascade and 2 Halletauer plants. I know that the Halletauer is disease prone, but I didn't know that at the time of purchase. I look foreward to a fun experience and sharing it with all of you.

Da Bear, I think that all cultivars of hops can potentially be suscept to pathogens. You can do your best to provide your plants with the best possible defense available. By providing enough nutrients and water you will find that your hops will be fine. I have been experimenting with the use of Messenger from EdenBio for enhanced pathogen resistance and have seen significant improvement.

Well, according to Dave Wills at Freshops, you really don't want to go horizontal with your bines. Mine haven't poked up yet (only in the ground since last Wednesday), but I have an 18 foot south facing wall along my house. The eave sticks out ~16" from the outside wall, and will hopefully work well as a stringer point for my Coir twine stringers. Guess I won't have to worry about that for another couple of weeks, but I can relax, and have a few homebrews in the mean time :-P Ttyal, and ilbcnu!

Prost!

Lufah, what types did you plant? I noticed that it looked like you had some that were really taking off and the others not as much. I'm in Memphis Tn and they are on the south side of my fenced in yard. They do get some shade but not a lot. I have 6 cascade and 2 hallertau and so far the hallertau are going the fastest. I had the 2 strung up about 4 feet then running along the fence. They are about 3 feet tall so far. The cascade has taken it's time above ground and just now getting to about 2.5 feet tall for the biggest ones. I am just kind of making sure that they stay weed free and getting Miracle Grow about once a week like all of my other plants. Other than that, no special treatments. I'll have pics of the trullace that I built soon.
