Growin' My Own Shit!

Mon Mar 17, 2008 5:38 pm

Well I just ordered a copy or Homebrewers Garden or whatever its called and some Centennial and Horizon hop rhizomes. I'm going to try growing my own on the south side of my house where they will get plenty of sunlight. I am going to grown them in Very Big buckets instead of put them in the ground because I don't plan on being in my place for too long since my family is growing faster than these hops will. I thought I'd start this thread and see who else is getting ready to start their first crop.

Our homebrew club has acquired about an acre of land so we are going to start our own little hop crop there too. Any good advice from you fellow growers before I go and listen the 1-15-06 archive with Vinny C?

P.S. Being St. Pattys day I thought it was more than appropriate that I pick up the new Flogging Molly CD. Fucking Rocks.

the main thing I can think of from what vinnie said was to go for the bat crap to fertilize, and wait til the second year to harvest.

I am going to do this for sure with my home crop. As for the big crop, not sure how realistic the bat guano will be due to the cost.

Anyone remember the yields/acre that Ralph Olson said in the hops/grain show? You guys could have a crap-ton of hops.

I'm sure we'll have to keep it to a managable amount for a few people to be taking care of. I'm sure after this summer We'll have a good idea of how much hops we can handle. Northern Brewer ordered 1 crystal, 2 fuggles, 2 goldings, 2 magnum and 2 saaz rhizomes and I guess he is planning on harvesting some rhizomes from his vines in his back yard which are Horizon, and two others that I can't remember (maybe Cascade or Centennial). I'm going to get some Horizon and Centennial going at my house too.

I got my Rhizomes this week. Last fall I bought a Cascade Rhizome at a ho fest and planted it late. I don't expect a lot from it, but it had 1 2 feet of growth when I planted it.

This year I got another Cascade, Goldings, and Fuggle. I like me the Brittish Ales!

My parents have hops growing in their back yard, but iis just for decoration. They use it to grow over a chain link fence. They get a shit load of hops on it though, but I don't know what they are. I think they may be Cluster, but I don't have any way to really confirm that. I may try to brew with them this year. I ilke experiments!
