Wow, I thought my LHBS was bad about carrying old yeast......

It wasn't HopCity or Brewmaster's Warehouse, it was a newer, smaller store on my side of town that I like very well and don't want to speak poorly of them. It did swell some, but not how I would have liked. I pitched it to the starter about 4 hours after it got smacked.

What is the shelf life of refrigerated liquid yeast?? Most I have bought have been dated 4-6 weeks earlier. I guess I don't really know when to say "That's just too old.".

I have heard Whitey say on one of the shows that if stored properly you should have about 50% viability at 4 months after production. I like to try to get them within 1 month or earlier if possible. I used to be able to get <1 week old packs before Midwest and Northern merged as Midwest store was also its warehouse.

GODDAMN PIECE OF SHIT BREWHAULER!!!!!!!

I went to pull the carboy from the 'fridge yesterday afternoon so I could take a sample and the stupid ass straps on the Brewhauler shifted and the carboy fell out of the hauler, to the concrete in my garage and needless to say...shattered. I lost about $35 in ingredients and $40+tax+shipping in the carboy! Not to mention the 5 gallons of beer!!! FFFFUUUUCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!! Why couldn't the jerks at Brewhauler spend the extra pennies to have the straps stitched together where they should be????????

Ouch... Glad your costs didn't include ER costs. I still love glass carboys and use them...but thankfully have yet to break one. I do ensure the straps on my brew hauler (or use a milk crate) are set before trying to lift a carboy with them.

You mean stupid ass brewer for not checking the straps??

They're not supposed to be stitched down. They're designed for multiple sized carboys, so you can position the straps where you'd like them. It also makes it easier to get them on a full carboy with minimal disruption to the cake. Sorry about the beer, though, that sucks.
