Greetings from Metro Detroit

Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:52 am

Hello from the Detroit Area! I've been brewing on and off for a few years, all extract, and currently have my first brew in over a year fermenting away thanks to all the good info from the Sunday Session.

I've got to say I'm very excited about Jolly Pumpkin coming up on this weekend's show. I'm usually an archive listener but I'm going to try my best to get on live and on the Chat this Sunday for this one. I remember when they made their first appearance at the Michigan Summer Beer Festival and being blown away by how different they were from anything else I'd ever tried. Their E.S. Bam Bier is on one of my favorites.

Thanks Brewcasters and the BN Army, you all rock!

Let me be the first to welcome you to the forum! You've been listening to the archives for a while, so I probably don't need to warn you about bub, etc. :P

What are you brewing and what kind of set up do you have? We are nosey like that. If you have any kind of questions we will be glad to help. If you just want to give some of a bunch of shit, that is appreciated as well!

Welcome to the asylum!

Thanks for warm welcome, and I'm fully aware of Bub :D

Nothing too fancy in my setup. I started with a basic kit from a LHBS with a fermentation bucket, bottling bucket, glass carboy, and 5 gallon SS pot. The first few brews were done on ala stove top on my electric stove that took FOREVER to bring to temp. This last batch was done on a newly purchased outdoor cooker which makes a big difference! It was also my way of showing my step father how the process is done so he goes to the beer fest in a few weeks all-knowledgable-n-shit and I didn't want him to get bored waiting ;)

After (re)listening to several of the archive shows I did change a few things for this brew. I started using PBW and Starsan for cleaning and sanitizing instead of Onestep, decided to try the late extract method to try and tone down on the caramel flavors I had in previous brews, and lastly ditch the bucket for fermentation and go straight for the carboy for 3-4 weeks. I know that's more than one change in the whole process at one time, but I figure it's step father's first time so it can be his first process instead :P I even left the carboy in his basement so he can watch how it progresses. We'll bottle it either on the 12th or the 19th depending on his work schedule and see how things have faired.

I live in Metro Detroit and have been searching for glass Carboys. I'd like to find something at the best price possible. Aren't we all. I've heard I can find them in Eastern Market. Any ideas?

My in-laws are Michiganders, and we were just there visiting about 3 weeks ago. I have to say, you guys have some great beers out there.
