Brew Virgin

Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:20 pm

So I am a newbie here. A little bio on myself. I have a food background. After college I didnt want a desk job and ended up in culinary school at the French Culinary Institute in NYC. I lived up there for a year and then came back home to Mississippi and worked in restaurants and catering. Anyway long story short after 2 kids I needed a desk job and a steady M-F 8-5 gig. So here I am at a desk job looking for a hobby and I found brewing which is freaking great.

I bought a normal starters kit to begin with and have my first brew a few days away from being ready to drink. I bought the Apricot Ale batch at Williams Brewing...one because I am hoping my wife will like it and won't give me grief when I continue down this fun road. And the other reason they said its one of the easiest to begin with since it is the liquid malt extract.

I did buy John Palmer's book and what is great about it is how he did the first chapter because like he said I just wanted to grasp a little bit of the basics and jump right into and learn as I go. So I know I made some mistakes with the first batch but it will be fun to try it out hopefully this weekend. I bottled it last Saturday and I am going to pop one open and see what I created.

Anyway I look forward to learning from yall out there.

Cheers!
Fermenting: Blonde Ale

Bottled: Apricot Ale (my virgin batch)

Yes, welcome! I'm pretty damn new too but this forum is fantastic. The BN Army is the way to go!

Hopefully you can get the ole lady to understand when you end up with 2 chest freezers, a full size kegerator with multiple faucets, misc. stuff that will nickel and dime the shit out of you. :) FOrtunately for me, the wife and I keep separate finances. If I wanna blow my wad on brewing shit, she is none the wiser.

Welcome! :asshat:

Welcome.

I'm also new and have learned a lot from the folks here and the radio content, that you can replay over and over. I never would have been at the level I am at so soon if the pioneers that took the arrows and learned the hard way did not share their knowledge here with the rest of us.

I'm in the same boat. Separate finances that is. We have "our" money and then there is "her" money. :D
