That is definitely the first step! The picture is of the Third Edition. If you are being extremely cheap, you can read the first edition for free at www.howtobrew.com. Definitely worth the visit.

Welcome Newbie!!! Looks like you don't need to be warned about the folks around here. Don't be intimidated. There are a hell of a lot more idiots like me than there are Ninkasi winners here, and we all work to help each other out. (Myslef, I've only just won my first two silver medals... :), sorry, had to brag) Except Bub, we don't help him, wejust use him as our comic punching bag. Hey, I think I just came up with a new word- "Bub-bag"- Defined as the guy around the office, etc that everyone picks on for no good reason, until one day he snaps and throws a copy machine through a window...

I like it!

Anyway, back to beer- I fully agree with the suggestions here-to-for mentioned... Buy Palmer's Book. I think there's another good book of recipes around here somewhere... Writtne by Palmer and some other guy... Jim? James? Jamil? Something like that. If you look hard enough, you'll find it somewhere (the BN Store).

Also, Fermentation temperature control is very important. Even if you rig something together, get a temperature controller, then you can at least connect a heat pad & use bags of ice to control it if you have to. Full Wort Boils is another big improvement. I, too, am an extract brewer, and you can make some really good beer without jumping to all grain. You do have less control over the finished product with extract, but depending on your time/money/commitment level, you don't have to be in a huge rush to go all grain. I've been using a turkey fryer for the past year or so and it makes things a lot easier!

Good luck, and ask away!

The best advice I remember getting was from Charlie Papazian's column in Zymurgy a few years ago: "There are no known human pathogens that can live in beer." If you want to experiment, knock yourself out. It won't kill you. You may wish you were dead, but it won't kill you. Make the beer you like.

Welcome!

Damn, that's a good book.

Just got done reading it. I borrowed a copy from a friend and dug right in. I think I need my own copy.

Temperature control is my next goal. I've moved the operation down to my basement where the temp is steady (about 64-68) in the day. It'll work for now, but I need something for fall and winter.

I'm hooked on this shit. I now own three fermenting buckets and right now they're all full and fermenting away in the basement.

Fritz, you remember the pain well. Ever since I moved back to this town I've picked up my boozy ways.
