OH MY GOD...
This thread is like getting kicked in the balls... then getting kicked in the balls again... then right after all the pukeing is done... getting kicked in the NUTS by a mule.

My understanding is that it dates back to the Revolutionary War...most of the engineers and their commander in the Continental Army's Corps of Engineers were on loan from France. When the Corps was offically organized in 1802, the first heraldic badges bore the motto "Essayons", most likely as a nod to the Continental Army engineers.
