If you are talking generation or time period ... Mario and Wayne played at pretty much the same time. Their period of dominance was pretty much around the same time. Gretzky averaged nearly 2 points a game for his CAREER.
Even when Gretz played for the Rangers he still was close to 2 100 pt seasons. Granted his last year wasn't great, but whos retirement year is? And i am pretty sure Mario had to retire when Wayne was a Ranger.
