I laughed as I read my post on this point. Hyperbole, of course.

Gucci Pilot wrote:Again respectfully, I think that you might want to research more aspects of the Bill of Rights. Erosion of the 1st as many in the media during the Nixon administration complained, the NRA has lobbied on the 2nd, Texas on the 14th, the trial lawyers assoc of america for the 4th (close to home), etc have led us to where we have a argument over a pocket knife.

Fo sho' brotha. We've legislated ourselves into absurdity.

I'm no constitutional scholar, but it is a living document that requires constant interpretation to sustain itself. There is a tension between the world the framers lived in and our modern world, and that modern world keeps changing. We can't ignore this and read a 200 year old document literally and without context. A purely literal reading of any document is disastrous, otherwise my bible gives me the authority to stone my neighbor. However, we can over-contextualize ourselves into a debate over pocketknives and render the document meaningless and impotent. There lies the tension, and that's what keeps this shit interesting. I don't know the answer, but like you I know right from wrong and I'm sure going to speak up when I need to.

I respect your opinion a great deal bleachcola, and gucci you have a special authority on these matters, but I've never understood this argument. In the age of the minutemen, a group of motivated citizens could be equally armed and put up a fight with the Redcoats. But what chance do a bunch of dudes with guns and have with the 101st airborne? Or, for that matter, the USS Ronald Regan Strike Force Group? In order restore the balance, we'd have to legalize grenade launchers, strike fighters and nuclear warheads.

There are millions of licensed hunters in this country. Think about what a hunter does. He's trained to blend into the environment, stalk prey, and then snipe it at 300+ yards. That's a sniper dude. Not to mention the fact that a very good portion of the armed services and domestic police forces would never turn gestapo on their own people. Even if they were 100% loyal to some kind of tyrannical leader, they would be so quickly demoralized by domestic "insurgents" around here. You think Iraq is a bad insurgency? That would be a playground to what Americans have to offer. We're better armed, better trained, and smarter.

Glad to see Gucci beat me to the punch for where our armed forces loyalty lies. Coming from a military family I honestly believe that the vast majority of folks in the military are pro Second Amendment and strongly believe in freedom from oppression. They're willing to die to protect those rights. I just don't see them putting aside those values bc some politician they didn't even vote for tells them to.

Which agency?

CBP: Customs and Border Protection (formally US Customs Service) in the Department of Homeland Security or, as I like to call it, Minisrtry for the Defense of the Fatherland

I'd like the believe the same thing about the average Law enforcement officer

Like if an order came down that they needed to go door to door confiscating guns they would take a moment to analyze the order and say "whoa, wait a minute"

I know most Cops come off as Pricks but I like to think when push comes to shove they would be on the side of the populace rather than the federal government

again, this is just if things get REALLY bad

No you can't have the Red Rider toilet seat, you'll shoot your ass off.

I definitely disagree with the proposal to ban certain very common pocket knives, but I don't see what the big deal is about assault weapons. If you think that platoon sized elements will be storming your house then we probably need to legalize hand grenades, claymores, and maybe artillery for your buddy down the block to provide indirect fire. Other than that, why do you need an automatic weapon, or an extended mag for that matter? If the first 10 rounds are just as deadly as the last five, why do you need more? Just learn to be a better marksman if you can't hit the target the first 10 times. As a former infantryman, I prefer semi-automatic weapons anyway (other than the .50 cal machine gun and MK19, those are just fun). One well aimed shot beats spray-and-pray most of the time.

I've enjoyed this thread. Just wanted to throw in my $0.02.

I think that pretty much sums it up

Also, assault weapons are not "automatic" they are semi-automatic

Automatic or "Machine guns" have already been banned and have been since the 80's
