Where should outgoing PMs be going?

Yeah I know this is a noobish question but I've got a bunch of PMs in my Sent Items folder and recently my messages have been going to Outbox. I know on Outlook, messages in the outbox haven't been sent. Is the same true for the forum? And if so, why can't I figure this out?

I think those in the outbox have not been read by the recipient yet and those in the sent box have been read.
